The NYU union representatives have been working hard filing grievances and holding the university to task when they violate the contract. We have several wins to announce in the past month.

We secured a settlement after filing a Step 2 grievance when the university failed to provide a member with course load reduction pay owed. The university acknowledged the member's right to the payment, and the member will now be paid the approximately $7,000 that they were owed.

We also secured a termination payment for an adjunct who was informed that he would receive his termination payment on Sept 1, 2027. This was despite the fact that he submitted a timely request to teach letter by Dec. 15, 2025. The union filed a Step 1 grievance and the adjunct was subsequently paid in the amount of approximately $13,000.

When members know their rights under our contract and tell a rep or steward when they believe those rights have been violated, we can work together to ensure that members get what they're owed, and that management doesn't get away with evading its obligations at our expense. An explanation of course loads and course load reduction pay can be found here. If you believe that the contract has been violated, let our reps know immediately at nyu@actuaw.org.

FREQUENTLY USED TERMS
AND THEIR DEFINITIONS

There are several frequently used terms that show up in the contract and in our communications. This month, we wanted to highlight them and provide their definitions to ensure all our members fully understand each of them.

International: The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with members in virtually every sector of the economy.

Local: Local 7902 is a smaller, regional branch or chapter of UAW international. It consists of X units, of which our unit representing adjuncts is one.

Bargaining Unit: Our bargaining unit consists of adjunct faculty who teach at New York University.

Bargaining Unit Eligibility(BUE): The criteria that determines whether an adjunct's job classification, role, and duties deems them eligible to be represented by the ACT-UAW Local 7902 collective bargaining agreement. Adjuncts must teach 40+ contact hours in an academic year to be considered bargaining unit eligible (BUE). If you are BUE, your wages, hours, and working conditions are typically governed by our Collective Bargaining Agreement, which was negotiated by the union.

Article X and reappointment rights: Article X of our contract does not give adjunct faculty a right to be reappointed. It gives us the right to be notified of our appointments by a fixed date and the right to a payout—course load reduction pay or termination pay—when an established baseload is not met. This is what is meant by the term“reappointment rights.”

Insufficient registration: A course cancelled with less than 50 percent of scheduled enrollment, or with 5 or fewer students enrolled, whichever is higher.

Courseload reduction payment: Courses for which an adjunct has reappointment rights that are canceled for reasons other than curriculum change or insufficient registration are due a courseload reduction payment equivalent to the contact hour pay rate of the previous academic year by September 1 of the academic year that the course was canceled, if a timely request to teach letter was submitted.

Termination payment: A termination payment in the amount of the total compensation earned by an adjunct in the the academic year prior to being terminated (ie. not being reappointed to any courses) is due by September 1 of the academic year that the adjunct was terminated, if they submitted a timely request to teach letter, or by September 1 of the academic year following termination, if they did not submit a timely request to teach letter.

Grievance: A formal complaint filed by an adjunct or the union when university management violates the terms of our CBA, workplace rules, established past practices, or employment laws.

TAKE NOTE AND DO THIS NOW

For those who qualify, it is time to submit your Request for Reappointment letter (also known as the Request to Teach letter).

This letter requires the department to provide you with a reappointment letter by May 21, 2027 (or March 21, 2028, for Summer 2028) that lays out your Fall, Winter, and Spring Academic Year 2027-2028 appointments.

You acquire or maintain reappointment rights if you taught at least one course in the same department in any two semesters in 2026-2027 and 2025-2026 or one course in the same department in one semester for each of the prior four academic years.

  • If you are unsure whether you qualify, send the letter anyway.

  • If your director or chairperson told you you don’t need to send it, send it anyway.

  • Send a separate letter to every department, division, or school you taught at in 2026-2027.

  • If your qualifying semester is in Spring or Summer 2027, send the letter.

Always send a letter!

Send the letter to the person who communicates with you about your courses, or click here for the most current list of administrators. The letter must be sent by December 15th. (Note: There is a ten business day grace period.)
