OPEN POSITION:
NYU ADJUNCTS UNION REPRESENTATIVE
Union Representatives play a critical role in defending NYU adjunct faculty rights and enforcing our collective bargaining agreement (contract) with New York University.
With the gains we’ve secured in our contract, the work now is ensuring those protections are upheld, expanding member engagement, and building the strength we need to win an even stronger contract in 2028.
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while working closely with adjunct faculty colleagues across NYU.

Part-time, paid position
15–20 hours per week on average (some variability week to week; Fall and Spring semesters usually require more hours of labor per week than Summer or Winter)
Includes a mandatory weekly union meeting
Additional responsibilities include:
Grievance meetings with the University
Member town halls and drop-in meetings
Union events and organizing activities
Appointments are made one semester at a time, with preference given to candidates able to serve multiple semesters.
Applicants must be members in good standing dating back to May 17, 2025 or earlier.
Key Responsibilities
Union Representatives are responsible for a range of organizing, communications, and contract enforcement work, including:

Supporting adjunct faculty in grievance and disciplinary meetings with University management
Assisting with union-wide campaigns (e.g., Paid Family Leave, card signing, contract campaign preparation)
Communicating regularly with members across multiple platforms
Collaborating with stewards to track and maintain member data across schools and departments
Developing and updating materials for adjunct faculty
Supporting, and at times facilitating, department-level meetings
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL:
Have strong knowledge of the union contract—or the ability to learn it quickly

Be highly organized and detail-oriented
Demonstrate reliability, accountability, and a strong work ethic
Show resilience and follow-through, even in challenging situations
Be committed to building union power and increasing member engagement
Take initiative while also collaborating effectively with others

MONITORING COURSE REGISTRATION
In recent semesters, adjunct faculty have noticed that their assigned courses do not always appear visible on Albert during the enrollment period. For those with reappointment rights, this can lead to the course being canceled for insufficiency of registration and the adjunct faculty member denied course load reduction pay per the contract. We believe that if the course cancels because it is not available for students to register, and the adjunct’s course load has not been met, the university is responsible to pay course load reduction pay if the course cancels for insufficiency of enrollment and the adjunct faculty member possesses reappointment rights.
We recommend taking screenshots of the “student” face of Albert regularly. Such a record can prove vital, if a course cancellation later leads to a grievance. To assist faculty, we have prepared these instructions for finding courses on the student facing Albert site.
