SUMMER REAPPOINTMENT LETTERS
BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR SUMMER REAPPOINTMENT LETTERS
Summer reappointment letters are due by Saturday, March 21. Since spring break runs from March 16 - March 20, they may be easy to miss. If you are expecting class reappointments for Summer 2026 and do not receive a letter by March 21, please contact your department and cc us at nyu@actuaw.org, as soon as possible.
If you have reappointment rights and did not receive all of the courses that you have rights to in Fall 2025, Winter 2026, or Spring 2026, the university must offer you courses in the Summer, or provide a course load reduction payment.
Reappointment protections are covered mainly in Article IV and X of our contract. If you sent a request for reappointment letter (also known as a request to teach letter) on or before January 9, 2025, your reappointment rights for Summer 2026 are in effect, and you are owed an appointment letter by March 21.
Reappointment letters should contain the list shown here for each course.
Administrative service pay is not required in reappointment letters. However, you are still eligible for administrative service pay per course, per section as follows:
2026 is a big year for our Local - It is the year of our triennial elections! Democratic election of our leadership is one of the most important rights we have as union members. Below you’ll find information on the relevant dates, what positions are open, and how to run.
Triennial elections will take place April 27th to April 30, 2026. Our triennials are the major elections in which all positions are filled for the next three-year term. Democratic election of our leadership is one of the most important rights we have as union members.
Please note the following dates:
Nominations opened on Monday, March 2nd
Nominations close end of day on Sunday, March 15th
Nominees will be notified of their eligibility by Monday, March 23rd
The deadline for candidate statements and literature will be Monday, April 6th
Voting will take place on April 27th through April 30th
There will be several other notices of the election sent to members during this period, with more information about voting as the election approaches.
POSITIONS & ELIGBILITY
You can read more about our union’s governing bodies here, and descriptions of officer positions can be found in Article 40 of the UAW Constitution. We will be electing the following positions:
EXECUTIVE BOARD
President
First Vice President
Second Vice President
Financial Secretary-Treasurer
Recording Secretary
Trustees (x3)
Sergeant-at-arms
Guide
NYU Unit Chair
All these positions will serve on the Local’s Executive Board as well as the Joint Council. Executive Board positions are open to those who have been a member in good standing of the Local for at least 1 year prior to the election. Membership in good standing means having signed a membership card and paid dues. A candidate may not run for more than one local union Executive Board office on the same ballot.
JOINT COUNCIL & STEWARDS
In addition to Officer and Unit Chair positions, all Joint Council seats are also up for election. The Joint Council is the main deliberative body of the Local. Each unit receives a proportional allocation of seats based on a rolling average of their members in good standing. There are 10 positions open for the NYU Adjunct Unit.
Units also vote for their Stewards. There are no limits on Stewards.
To be eligible for the Joint Council or a Steward position, you must be a member in good standing for the past 6 months, which means you signed a membership card in any of the six units and paid dues.
CONVENTION DELEGATES
Lastly, we’ll be electing delegates to the UAW Constitutional Convention, which will be held in Detroit Michigan on June 15-18, 2026. Each unit will be apportioned a number of delegate seats. We will elect our delegates during our Triennial, but we will send a separate notice in the coming weeks detailed how many seats there are (Running as a Constitutional Delegate does not prevent you from also running for any other office)
NOMINATION PROCESS
If you would like to run for any of these offices, follow the instructions below.
To nominate yourself, you must inform the Election Committee in writing by emailing electioncommittee.7902@gmail.com, including your name, unit affiliation, and the position you wish to run for. You have the right to submit your commonly known name to the Election Committee as you desire it to appear on the ballot, and it shall so appear.
Here is a sample letter:
I, [Your Name], hereby nominate myself for the office(s) of [Insert office]. I am a member in good standing on [unit].
Full Name
Email Address
You can nominate another member. You must notify the Election Committee in writing via email at electioncommittee.7902@gmail.com that you have done so and you must inform that member. The member who is nominated is responsible for accepting the nomination. A member cannot accept a nomination on the behalf of another member. If a nominee does not accept the nomination, it shall be deemed a rejection of the nomination.
Nominations will close at 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 15, 2026. We urge all nominees to read and understand the Election Rules. The Election Committee will confirm each accepting nominee’s eligibility, and send a message confirming eligibility on Monday March 23rd.
UPDATE ON RAISING UNION DUES
On Friday February 27th the Joint Council (JC) will met to determine whether to proceed with a unionwide membership vote on raising dues and at what proposed rate - 1.64%, 1.84%, or 2.00%. The JC determined that they need more information sessions and surveys before moving forward. They will revise the calendar to consider a referendum vote after the triennial election takes place.
CONTRACT FACULTY STRIKE DEADLINE SET
CFU-UAW, the union of full-time continuing contract faculty at NYU, has set a strike deadline of March 23.
Add Your Name: The NYU Community Stands With Contract Faculty United - UAW
We are already seeing efforts by management to strike-break by asking adjunct faculty to take on the work of contract faculty in the event of a strike.
We want to be very clear up front:
Do not scab. Like most union contracts in the U.S., our contract prohibits us from striking in sympathy with other unions at NYU that go on strike while our contract is in effect. We must continue to perform our regular duties. However, none of us is under any obligation to cover work ordinarily performed by our contract faculty colleagues. Asking other workers to cover struck work is a strike-breaking tactic that undercuts workers’ leverage, making it harder to win strong contracts. There is nothing that we can do more damaging to our fellow workers than scabbing.
What “don’t take struck work” means
If you are asked to do any of the following things, we strongly urge you to decline:
Cover a class, lab, studio, clinical, or discussion section if asked to do so in the event of a strike or beginning the week of March 23
Perform grading, course administration, curriculum work, committee work, or any “temporary” replacement duties in the event of a strike or beginning the week of March 23
Accept a “one-time” extra work assignment because someone is out in the event of a strike or beginning the week of March 23
A simple, polite response is enough:
“Thank you. I’m afraid I’m not available to take that assignment.”
You do not need to justify it. If you’re pressured, then that’s union busting. If you are pressured to accept struck work, please let us know immediately.
We’ve set up an FAQ page for adjunct faculty to learn more here: FAQ
Why solidarity matters for adjunct faculty
It is common for employers to use divide-and-conquer tactics to break strikes. We know that course cancellations and austerity measures have left many adjunct faculty hurting. Our union is working to address that harm wherever we can. If management has in some instances replaced adjunct faculty with contract faculty, know that that's not the fault of contract faculty—it's the fault of management. Contract faculty winning a strong contract will diminish or eliminate any advantage that management may have had in the past in using them to replace us.
The path to better working conditions for both adjunct and contract faculty is solidarity. Contract faculty and adjunct faculty are fighting for the same things, which we all deserve: dignity, equity, and fairness.
Furthermore, CFU winning better wages and stronger protections will help adjunct faculty. For example:
Better pay and workload protections for contract faculty will diminish or eliminate any financial incentive that management may have to replace adjuncts with contract faculty.
Contract faculty are bargaining for robust protections for academic freedom and freedom of expression that would benefit ALL members of the university community and set a precedent for us to replicate in our own contract.
Contract faculty are also bargaining for strong protections against the use of AI to replace human instructors.

PAID FAMILY LEAVE:
call for testimonials!
In the fall, our union launched our paid family leave campaign. NYU indicated it would respond to our demands on a set timeline and has now missed that timeline.
We deserve a clear answer, and we deserve paid family leave.
One of our most powerful tools we have right now is written and visual testimonials from adjunct faculty.
Ask:
Share a short testimonial (video or written)
Your testimonial will be posted on our union website and social media
Are you an NYU Adjunct faculty member of the Act-Uaw local 7902?
Many questions have come up recently about how our union functions, where are dues are spent, how decisions are made and who gets paid for what work and from what sources. This Education and Strategic Planning Committee focuses on those and other questions regarding positives and negatives of the current contract, loopholes, and issues for future bargaining. We know there is a need for Adjuncts to connect by department as well as across departments. Please fill out this form so we can plan various meetings at times when members can meet.
Learn about/discuss the structure of the union and strategic planning. For more info contact Megan Goldman Petri and Judith Sloan (co-chairs Education and Strategic Planning Committee) through this form.
