Organizing Committee Meeting
Zoom link here

Please join the NYU Adjuncts Union Organizing Committee for our next meeting on Wednesday, January 24th, from 6:00-7:15 PM on Zoom.

The OC works to build community, solidarity, and collective strength among adjuncts across the dozen schools of NYU. In the fall of 2023 we signed up 80 new members in a union card drive; developed and deepened connections to other academic unions; and held monthly socials for our members. We also worked with others in the NYU Unit to gather over 2,000 signatures on a collective action letter calling on NYU President Linda Mills to protect adjunct jobs.

Now, at the start of the new year, we are gearing up and taking stock of the work that needs to be done: to improve communication and transparency in our unit, to secure our job protections as much as possible, and to continue increasing our membership far in advance of our next contract negotiations. We also work to build stronger ties with other academic workers in our union, city, and region.

We need your energy, skills, and ideas, as we work together to make our union more visible, effective, and strong. We, the members, are the highest authority in the union, so let’s come together and make ours the kind of union we want it to be. Our jobs depend on it!

Looking forward to seeing you there—and at our next NYU Adjuncts social (more info to come!).

Friday, January 26, 11am - 12:30pm
Member Town Hall

January's Member Town Hall (previously known as the monthly “membership meeting") seeks to provide a space for NYU Adjunct Faculty to express their thoughts and feelings about recent union activities, in particular the December 19 statement passed by the Joint Council and the processes by which it was created and disseminated. We hope you will leave the meeting feeling that your point of view is valued by the NYU Unit. We will also talk about rank-and-file member participation in our unit within the scope of our Local’s Bylaws and Constitution

Register here to attend and to obtain your zoom link. All are welcome to attend.

REPS’ CORNER:
Professional development fund grant

In each newsletter we answer common questions. In this issue we focus on  the professional development fund grant.

Yesterday, the professional development fund became available for the spring and summer semesters. NYU Adjunct Faculty who are members of the adjunct union may apply through this Application Form (Doc 30.8 KB) for a grant to support attendance at an academic conference, meeting, or other relevant professional development activity. There is $100,000 available for activities taking place during the spring and summer semesters. These funds are divided proportionally based on the number of adjuncts at each school. Funds are first come, first served so submit your application today!

Q: What is the maximum amount that I can receive toward professional development?
A: Adjunct faculty may apply for up to $1,250 to support any activity that helps them develop professionally. The most common uses for professional development are to attend an academic conference or meeting, but the benefit also extends to “other relevant professional development activity.”

Q: What qualifies as “other relevant professional development activity?”
A: In our most recent contract the union expanded the list of activities, and has created a specific list to offer examples. If you don’t see something on the list, you should still consider applying:

  • professional certification, recertification, or teaching advancement relating to you university appointment(s);

  • fees and travel expenses for professional conferences, conventions, courses supporting professional development, non-athletic co-curricular competitions, professional meetings, residencies, seminars, training or workshops relating to your university appointment(s);

  • fees, materials and services for exhibitions, projects, portfolio review, publication, or professional projects including but not limited to creative, technical, scientific, or engineering works relating to your university appointment(s);

  • professional organization membership relating to your university appointment(s);

  • research (library and archival visits, ethnographic research and field trips) relating to your university appointment(s);

  • purchase of software; and/or professional training in software and other technology relating to your university appointment(s);

  • subscriptions to professional publications or services relating to your university appointment(s);

  • webinars relating to your university appointment(s);

  • organizing or co-organizing a conference relating to your university appointment(s).

Q: How often can I apply to receive reimbursement for professional development?
A: Each adjunct faculty is eligible for up to $1250 once per academic year (September 1-August 31). They may not apply more than once, even if they didn’t use up the entire $1250 allotted.

ADJUNCT UNION REPRESENTATIVES

Our union has seven adjunct faculty representatives, or reps. Reps are here to answer questions and to help if you have problems with your department or want to alert us about something that seems off. If you have any questions or concerns about the contract or a complaint about your working conditions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at nyu@actuaw.org. By advocating for yourself, you are enforcing the contract for all union members.
