REPS’ CORNER:
Administrative Payment Schedule

In each newsletter we answer common questions. In this issue we focus on administrative payment schedule.

Q: What is administrative pay?
A: For the first time, and as a result of intense bargaining with NYU in 2022, adjuncts now receive administrative pay for work done outside the classroom. This is a new pay category negotiated by the union.

Q: How much will I receive for the administrative pay?
A: Administrative pay varies depending on the number of credits assigned for your  course. For the 2023-2024 academic year, the payment is as follows:

  • Non-credit, no credit, 1-, or 2-credit courses: $1,035 per course, per semester

  • 3-credit courses: $1,552.50 per course, per semester

  • 4-credit courses: $2,070 per course, per semester

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the payment is as follows:

  • Non-credit, no credit, 1-, or 2-credit courses: $1,071.23 per course, per semester

  • 3-credit courses: $1,606.84 per course, per semester

  • 4-credit courses: $2,142.45 per course, per semester

Q: When will I receive the administrative pay?
A:  For the first year of the contract (Academic Year 2022-2023), administrative pay arrived in off-cycle checks after the end of each semester. However, starting in fall 2023, administrative pay is divided equally and arrives in the same checks as the payments for our courses. Therefore, if you were teaching a course in summer 2024, you have been receive part of your administrative pay in each of your summer paychecks.

Q: Administrative pay is not listed in my appointment letter. How do I check to confirm that I have been receiving administrative pay?
A: Although administrative pay is not required to be included in your reappointment you can always view your activity pay in People Sync. Use this tip sheet to do so.

Monitoring course registration

In recent semesters, adjunct faculty have noticed that their assigned courses do not always appear visible on Albert during the enrollment period. For those with reappointment rights, this can lead to the course being canceled for low enrollment and the adjunct denied course load reduction pay per the contract We believe, if the course cancels because it is not available for students to register, the university is responsible to pay courseload reduction pay if the course cancels for insufficiency of enrollment and the adjunct faculty member possesses reappointment rights. We recommend taking screenshots of the “student” face of Albert regularly. Such a record can prove vital, if a course cancellation later leads to a grievance.

Thus, the union recommends screenshotting your course on Albert from now and then every few weeks going forward. The screenshots must be of the public-facing Albert site students see, not the one unique to faculty on our personal Albert page accessible though NYU HOME. To assist faculty, we have prepared these instructions for finding courses on the student facing Albert site

ADJUNCT NEWS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Tilted Axes in The New Yorker — “What do you call it when 14 musicians in a mobile rock band, whose fans include Philip Glass, show up on a spot of green near Lincoln Center and start playing strange music? ‘I like to shake people out of the expected by popping up and playing strange music in the middle of their day,’ says the experimental composer (and NYU Tisch adjunct) Patrick Grant of his group, Tilted Axes.” https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/J1CsOe. — Tilted Axes is a multiple recipient of the NYU Tisch Adjunct Professional Development Award.
