FAQs:

Health insurance

  • After working at NYU for one year, adjuncts may apply annually for health insurance through the university's United Healthcare plans.

Adjuncts are eligible if they taught either:

    • A minimum of 40 contact hours of instruction in an Academic Year

    • A minimum of 75 hours of individual instruction or tutoring in a semester in an Academic Year

    *Academic Year = September 1st - August 31st (Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer)

  • The enrollment period opens in mid-October and usually runs for two to three weeks. Both the union and the university will send reminders via email.
    Coverage begins on January 1.

You may also enroll outside of the enrollment period if you have a qualifying life event.

NYU maintains an official list of qualifying life events, but the most common are:

    • Marriage

    • Retirement

    • Losing health insurance coverage from another employer

    • Separating from a partner who provided you coverage

    • Disability

    • Birth or adoption of a child

  • No. NYU’s coverage continues all year, whether or not you are teaching for a semester or two. However, remember that taking a semester off might affect your subsidy level in the following year.

  • The amount you pay for health insurance is directly related to how many contact hours you taught in the previous academic year.

    • 40-55 Contact Hours = 50%

    • 56-125 Contact Hours = 60%

    • 126+ Contact Hours = 80%
