Following a presentation of major data findings, we will open up the discussion to hear from you about how these changes might guide our strategy going forward with an emphasis on organizing and contract renegotiation prep in the years to come.

Joint Council Meeting
Zoom Registration Link
The next Joint Council meeting is fast approaching. During this meeting, elections for the Standing Election Committee will be held. Election Committee members will serve a three year term running our Union elections!
This term will cover a Special Election this Fall 2024 to fill vacant seats, as well as the Triennial Election in Spring 2026, and any other election needs that arise. There are 5 open seats on the Committee, with two alternates (those that garner the 6th and 7th highest votes should there be resignations in the first four months).
In order to be eligible to serve on the election committee, you must be a member in good standing and you cannot be a candidate in the upcoming election.
Job Description: Please note the responsibilities and expected time commitments of Election Committee Members.
Here is the process to self nominate:
Attend the JC meeting on Friday, Sept 13 at 2PM where nominations will be taken from the floor. If you are not a JC member you can write in the Q&A that you want to self nominate and you will be moved to the panelist side to state your intent to run. Please be prepared with a short candidate statement of why you are running.
Alternatively, you can fill out this self nomination form and your nomination will be brought to the floor on your behalf. Please complete this form by noon on Sept 13.

REPS’ CORNER:
Professional Development Fund Grant
In each newsletter we answer common questions. In this issue we focus on the professional development fund.
The professional development fund is now available for the fall and winter semesters. NYU Adjunct Faculty who are members of the adjunct union may apply through this Application Form (Doc 30.8 KB) for a grant to support attendance at an academic conference, meeting, or other relevant professional development activity. There is $100,000 available for activities taking place during the fall and winter semesters. These funds are divided proportionally based on the number of adjuncts at each school. Funds are first come, first served so submit your application today!
Q: What is the maximum amount that I can receive toward professional development?
A: Adjunct faculty may apply for up to $1,250 to support any activity that helps them develop professionally. The most common uses for professional development are to attend an academic conference or meeting, but the benefit also extends to “other relevant professional development activity.”
Q: What qualifies as “other relevant professional development activity?”
A: In our most recent contract the union expanded the list of activities, and has created a specific list to offer examples. If you don’t see something on the list, you should still consider applying:
professional certification, recertification, or teaching advancement relating to you university appointment(s);
fees and travel expenses for professional conferences, conventions, courses supporting professional development, non-athletic co-curricular competitions, professional meetings, residencies, seminars, training or workshops relating to your university appointment(s);
fees, materials and services for exhibitions, projects, portfolio review, publication, or professional projects including but not limited to creative, technical, scientific, or engineering works relating to your university appointment(s);
professional organization membership relating to your university appointment(s);
research (library and archival visits, ethnographic research and field trips) relating to your university appointment(s);
purchase of software; and/or professional training in software and other technology relating to your university appointment(s);
subscriptions to professional publications or services relating to your university appointment(s);
webinars relating to your university appointment(s);
organizing or co-organizing a conference relating to your university appointment(s).
Q: How often can I apply to receive reimbursement for professional development?
A: Each adjunct faculty is eligible for up to $1250 once per academic year (September 1-August 31). They may not apply more than once, even if they didn’t use up the entire $1250 allotted.
Don’t leave money on the table
ITake advantage of NYU’s 5% retirement match!
Have you been contributing to the University’s retirement plan? A hard-won gain in our contract is a 5% non-elective contribution and a 5% matching contribution by NYU. So, NYU will match up to 5% of what you contribute to the retirement plan during this academic year. This contribution will be made in December 2025 for eligible adjuncts*. By our estimates, only about a third of adjuncts are currently contributing to the university’s retirement plan. If you don’t want to leave money on the table, consider making contributions sooner rather than later. *See our contract(pages 64 - 67) for more information about eligibility criteria.
