REPS’ CORNER:
Reappointment for Fall 2024, Winter 2025, and Spring 2025

In each newsletter we answer common questions. In this issue we focus on reappointment for Fall 2024, Winter 2025, and Spring 2025.

Q: When will I find out what classes I’m being offered for the fall semester?
A: If you have reappointment rights and submitted your reappointment request letter by December 15, 2023, you should receive your reappointment letter for Fall 2024, Winter 2025, and Spring 2025 on or before May 21. If you don’t have reappointment rights, your department can give you an appointment letter as late as 14 days before the start of the Fall, Winter or Spring semester you teach in.

Q: How do I know if I have reappointment rights?
A: To have reappointment rights for a course, you must have taught that course for two different semesters (fall, winter, spring, and/or summer) in two consecutive years preceding reappointment or one semester per year for four consecutive years immediately preceding reappointment in the same department. Additionally, you should have submitted your reappointment request letter by December 15, 2023, or by the end of the grace period on January 9, 2024.

Q: Once I get my letter, do I have to respond to my department?
A: If you submitted your reappointment request letter by the time frame indicated above and have reappointment rights, you are not required to respond to the reappointment letter that you receive. If you did not submit a timely reappointment request letter, then you must email your chair or director and accept the reappointment within 30 days. Failure to respond within 30 days may result in a loss of your teaching appointment and a loss of access to course load reduction or termination pay.

Q: What should I do if I don’t receive a reappointment letter?
A: If you are expecting a letter and don’t receive anything, contact the union immediately. In your correspondence, please state whether you submitted a reappointment request letter by December 15, 2023 or by the end of the grace period on January 9, 2024. Also, please include a completed copy of your work history. This needs to be received no later than Tuesday, May 28. It will help us determine the best course of action to move forward. Note, summer 2025 letters will arrive in March of 2025.

Q: What should I do if I can’t teach the course I am appointed to this fall, but I want to return to teaching the course in fall 2025?
A: If you're thinking of taking some time off, after receiving your appointment letter, you can decline to teach for a semester or a full year. Eligibility criteria apply. The Decline to Teach letter should be sent to your department chair or director. This letter protects your rights to return to your appointments with no break in service. You can read complete details in Article X, section C of our contract.
